Top Indian Wrestlers Criticize BJP for Fielding Son of Former Federation Chief Accused of Sexual Harassment

New Delhi, May 3 (Reuters) – Top Indian Olympic wrestlers have condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for nominating the son of their former federation chief, who is facing charges of sexual harassment, as a candidate in the ongoing national elections.

Last year, scores of Indian wrestlers demanded legal action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP lawmaker, over allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation. Despite facing these serious accusations, Singh, who denies any wrongdoing and is currently out on bail, continues to wield political influence.

In the midst of India’s extensive general election, Singh’s son Karan is standing as a BJP candidate in his father’s stronghold, the Kaiserganj constituency in the politically pivotal Uttar Pradesh state. Singh has previously secured victory in this seat six times.

Sakshi Malik, a bronze medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, expressed her dismay on social media, stating, “Daughters of the country have lost, Brij Bhushan won. By giving an election ticket to his son, they have shattered the aspirations of the country’s millions of daughters.”

The ongoing parliamentary election, spanning seven phases from April 19 to June 1, is anticipated to secure Modi a third term as Prime Minister, according to widespread predictions.

Malik’s protest against the BJP’s decision echoes the sentiments of her fellow Olympic medallist, Bajrang Punia, who returned one of India’s highest civilian awards in solidarity with the cause.

Punia remarked on social media, “It is the misfortune of the country that daughters who win medals will be dragged on the streets and the son of the person who sexually exploits them will be honored by giving him a ticket.”

Jairam Ramesh, spokesperson for the opposition Congress party, criticized the BJP’s actions, labeling them as a “new low” and highlighting the party’s apparent lack of a “moral compass.”

In response to the opposition’s allegations, Awanish Tyagi, a state BJP spokesperson, dismissed the criticism, accusing opponents of deliberately creating issues.

The controversy surrounding Singh’s candidacy underscores broader concerns about accountability and ethical standards in Indian politics, particularly regarding allegations of violence or harassment against women.

As the election progresses, the decision to field Karan Singh as a candidate continues to spark debate and criticism across the political spectrum.
